Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live

Author : Oliver Update:Mar 16,2025

Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry over generative AI's use in replicating voice actor performances. While ZZZ, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (pre-dating its July 25, 2024 commencement), the actors chose not to sign new contracts, citing solidarity with striking union members and the lack of SAG Interim Agreement protections.

Chase stated their refusal to work without a SAG Interim Agreement covering AI protections led to their replacement. Thurkettle, a non-union member, faced a similar outcome, expressing shock at the unannounced recast and highlighting the existential threat AI poses to the industry. He emphasized his personal stand to advocate for AI protection, even at the cost of his role in ZZZ. Both actors learned of their replacements through the patch notes, with neither receiving prior communication from HoYoVerse or Sound Cadence.

HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.

This situation echoes a similar incident involving Activision and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Activision confirmed recasting some Zombies mode characters, including William Peck (voiced by Zeke Alton) and Samantha Maxis (voiced by Julie Nathanson), amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike. Alton expressed concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actor, potentially misrepresenting his abilities. He stated no issue with Activision's actions regarding Peck, but the lack of credit caused issues for his professional image.
