The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a fresh, innovative update nearly 50 years later with the release of Breakout Beyond. Developed by Choice Provisions, the creators of the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series, this new iteration maintains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways progression. As players move from left to right, their goal remains to break bricks, with the excitement escalating through intensified lights and effects as combos build up.
Breakout Beyond enhances the gameplay with special bricks that trigger stunning effects, including massive explosions and even a laser cannon. The game is set to feature 72 meticulously crafted levels, complemented by an unlockable endless mode where players can compete on a global leaderboard. For those who enjoy company, the game also supports local two-player co-op, allowing friends to team up and tackle the challenges together.
Originally designed as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico, which was announced in 2018 but has faced numerous delays, Breakout Beyond took a different path when Atari stepped in. In 2020, Atari acquired the rights to develop and complete Breakout Beyond. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
While the Intellivision Amico has yet to be released, Atari's acquisition of the Intellivision branding and rights last year did not include the Amico console itself. Fans of Breakout can look forward to experiencing Breakout Beyond later this year, as it will be available on a wide range of platforms including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
