Buy the Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Launch

Nintendo unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and we've been eagerly awaiting the start of preorders in the U.S. While the console's price wasn't a shock, the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch definitely raised some eyebrows. Notably, Mario Kart World will set you back $80 at launch. Additionally, Nintendo is rolling out a new line of Switch 2 accessories that have seen significant price hikes compared to the original Switch, with costs even rising since the initial announcement.

The only accessory from the new lineup that caught my attention was the Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a hefty $85. Given that I already own multiple Switch Pro controllers, I was relieved to hear from Nintendo's developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2.

While many might opt for the new Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you're set and can save that $80 for new games. For those planning to purchase the Switch 2 without a Pro controller, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.

Keep in mind, these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market to make way for the new version. Amazon is already facing stock shortages and is only offering third-party alternatives. Besides compatibility with the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2, though we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller for most gaming experiences.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get, you'll need to wait until the console launches on June 5. Preorders for the new console and its accessories, including the Switch 2 Pro controller, are expected to start on April 24. However, the Switch 2 Pro controller is exclusive to the Switch 2 and won't work with the original Switch.

Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already appeared at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a preorder date. Walmart's listings also include the Switch 2 games that will soon be available for preorder.
