Evil Dead: The Game, the beloved asymmetric multiplayer game inspired by the iconic action horror franchise, is no longer available for purchase. Its publisher, Saber Interactive, has initiated the process of pulling it from digital storefronts, marking the end of its sales journey three years after its initial launch in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Despite receiving an 8/10 in IGN's review, which praised it as "an asymmetric multiplayer game of cat and mouse that’s compelling and exhilarating, despite being rough around the edges - much like the horror/comedies that inspired it," the game struggled to maintain player engagement.
A Game of the Year Edition was released a year following the original launch, yet it failed to significantly boost player numbers. The situation worsened when, in September 2023, the planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled, and further content development was halted. Now, existing owners can continue playing as the servers will remain online, but new players won't have the chance to join in on the fun.
In a statement on the game's Steam page, Saber Interactive confirmed the removal:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has not been well-received by all, with numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page expressing disappointment over its removal from sale. The overall user review rating remains 'mixed'. One player, with over 380 hours in-game, left a positive review stating, "The end is nigh... It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for last year's hit Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to expand its portfolio with upcoming licensed movie games such as John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are also in development.
