Idris Elba, star of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, envisions a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action film alongside Keanu Reeves. Read on for his exciting comments about this potential collaboration!
A Night City Reunion?
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, promoting his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which also features Keanu Reeves), Idris Elba expressed his strong interest in a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action adaptation. He believes a film featuring himself and Keanu Reeves would be spectacular, stating, "Oh, man, that's a great question. I think if any film could do a live-action rendition, it could be [Cyberpunk 2077], and I think his character and my character together would be, ‘Whoa.’ So, let's speak that into existence."
Elba's enthusiasm stems from his and Reeves' prior collaboration. Reeves famously portrayed the iconic Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077, while Elba played Solomon Reed in the Phantom Liberty expansion.
This shared desire might not be unfounded. Variety reported in October 2023 that a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action project is underway, with CD Projekt Red partnering with Anonymous Content. While details remain scarce, the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the ongoing live-action Witcher series suggests a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation is a strong possibility.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Expands
Beyond a potential live-action film, the Cyberpunk universe continues to grow. A prequel manga to the acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS, has launched. This manga, penned by Bartosz Sztybor (producer of the anime and CDPR's narrative director), will explore the backstory of Rebecca and Pilar before joining Maine's crew. Currently available in several languages (with English to follow), the full volume is slated for release in 2025. A Blu-ray release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is also planned for 2025, and a new Cyberpunk 2077 animated series is in development. CD Projekt Red is clearly committed to expanding the Cyberpunk franchise across various media.
