PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
If you polled gamers on which pro sports franchise 2K should tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would likely top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising entry.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both casual and challenging gameplay, with options to adjust shot shaping and lateral tee box movement for strategic advantage. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, provided a satisfying experience.
MyCareer mode receives a boost with engaging narrative elements. I encountered a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing), where choices impacted stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear influencing stats, and upgradeable skills add depth. Weekly Quests, offering varied objectives like consecutive birdies, provide ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offered sufficient customization. Skill trees add welcome strategic depth. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to gush over, but it's a solid choice for golf fans and players seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
