Sony addressed the near-day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation regarding the root cause or preventative measures.
As recompense, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism, and this outage reinforces those concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. The April 2011 data breach resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent incident has left many PS5 users dissatisfied with Sony's lack of transparency and detailed response.
