Mastering Car Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: A Comprehensive Guide
Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicle use, but finding keys isn't always easy. Fortunately, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details the process and skill requirements.
Hotwiring allows you to drive any functional vehicle, regardless of possessing the keys. However, there are prerequisites: Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are necessary. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession at character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
Hotwiring Steps:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait for completion.
Once the hotwiring process finishes, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand!
Skill Leveling:
If you didn't start as a Burglar, you'll need to level up your Electrical and Mechanics skills. Gain experience by:
- Electrical: Disassembling electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts (vehicle parts can be accessed via right-click and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics").
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves while looting. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP to players. Appropriate tools, like screwdrivers, are needed for dismantling and installation.
