RGG Studio's Ability to Juggle Multiple Large-Scale Projects: A Testament to Sega's Risk-Taking Culture
RGG Studio, the creative force behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing several ambitious projects, including a brand-new IP. This remarkable feat is attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation, according to RGG Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama.
Sega's Bold Approach to IP Development
The studio's current lineup includes a new Like a Dragon title, a Virtua Fighter remake (slated for 2025), and two additional unannounced projects. This ambitious undertaking highlights Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities and its commitment to exploring uncharted territory. The recent unveiling of Project Century (a new IP set in 1915 Japan) and a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster) at The Game Awards 2025 and subsequently on Sega's official channel, underscores this commitment.
Yokoyama credits Sega's culture of risk-taking as a key factor in their success. In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Automaton Media), he stated that Sega embraces the possibility of failure, unlike companies that solely focus on safe bets. He points to the creation of Shenmue as an example of Sega's innovative spirit, born from the question: "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of multiple projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. Original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and the team, led by Yokoyama and producer Riichiro Yamada, is committed to delivering a high-quality, innovative experience.
Yamada emphasized their intention to create something "cool and interesting" that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers. Yokoyama expressed similar sentiments, encouraging gamers to anticipate both upcoming titles. The combined commitment to innovation and quality promises an exciting future for both RGG Studio and Sega.
