Top MicroSD Express Cards for Nintendo Switch 2

Author : Lillian Update:May 22,2025

With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, it's important to note that the console comes with only 256GB of built-in storage. If you're a gamer who loves to have a vast library at your fingertips, expanding that storage is essential to avoid the hassle of constantly uninstalling and reinstalling games. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 takes a different approach to storage expansion than its predecessor. It requires a MicroSD Express card, which is faster but also more expensive than traditional UHS-based SD cards.

MicroSD Express cards have been available for a while, but they haven't been widely adopted by creative professionals. With the imminent launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, we can expect a surge in the availability of these cards to meet the demand.

Keep in mind that since the Nintendo Switch 2 isn't out yet, these MicroSD Express cards haven't been tested with the console. However, they are produced by reputable manufacturers known for their high-quality storage solutions.

Why MicroSD Express?

The Nintendo Switch 2 mandates the use of MicroSD Express cards for storage expansion, a decision that Nintendo hasn't fully explained. Yet, the rationale seems clear: the new console is equipped with UFS flash storage, similar to what's found in smartphones, which is significantly faster than the eMMC drive in the original Switch. By requiring MicroSD Express cards, Nintendo ensures that games run smoothly, whether they're stored internally or on an expansion card.

Regular MicroSD cards can only be used for storing screenshots and videos from the first-gen Switch. Unlike the PS5, which supports last-generation games on slower external drives, the Nintendo Switch 2 offers no such flexibility. For expanding your storage, a MicroSD Express card is non-negotiable.

1. Lexar Play Pro

The Best MicroSD Express Card

Lexar Play Pro

Out of the available MicroSD Express cards, the Lexar Play Pro stands out as the fastest and most capacious option. With read speeds up to 900MB/s and storage up to 1TB, it's currently the best choice for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, due to high demand, it's currently out of stock. Keep an eye on this card, especially the 1TB version, and consider ordering from Adorama, where it's on backorder until July.

2. SanDisk MicroSD Express

The MicroSD Express Card You Can Actually Buy Right Now

SanDisk MicroSD Express

SanDisk, a well-known name in SD card manufacturing, offers a reliable MicroSD Express card. While it's limited to 256GB and slightly slower at 880MB/s, it's readily available and a good choice if you want to double your storage without waiting. The difference in speed won't be noticeable in games like Mario Kart World, making it a practical option for immediate purchase.

3. Samsung MicroSD Express for Switch 2

The Official Option We Know Very Little About

Nintendo Samsung MicroSD Express

Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, adds an official touch to your storage expansion. While specifics like storage speeds and available capacities are unknown, the assurance of Nintendo's endorsement might be comforting. I've reached out to Samsung for more details and will update this article as soon as I have more information.

MicroSD Express FAQ

How fast is MicroSD Express?

MicroSD Express cards are significantly faster than their predecessors, thanks to their use of PCI Express 3.1 technology, similar to what SSDs use in PCs. While full-sized SD Express cards can reach up to 3,940MB/s, MicroSD Express cards top out at 985MB/s, which is still a substantial improvement over the older MicroSD cards used in the original Nintendo Switch.

How long will a MicroSD Express card last?

MicroSD Express cards, like all SD cards, are not designed for long-term data storage and have a limited lifespan. Depending on usage and environmental conditions, you can expect them to last between 5-10 years. Always back up important data to ensure it's safe.
