An extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, previously known as Project Maverick and set in the rugged wilderness of Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, according to reports from Insider Gaming. Originally envisioned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, the project faced a major pivot following an internal review at Ubisoft. Despite strong feedback from both internal teams and testers, leadership chose to redirect the majority of development resources toward Project Blackbird—now recognized as the official Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer vision came when the core technical team was reassigned to other studio priorities.

Development responsibilities have since been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its support role in major Ubisoft titles. Meanwhile, nearly all members of the original team have been moved to focus on the next mainline Far Cry installment, signaling a full strategic shift.

As revealed by insider Tom Henderson in mid-December 2024, Far Cry 7 is shaping up to be one of the most intense entries in the series. Set against a chilling backdrop, the game will plunge players into a world defined by paranoia and urgency. The story centers on a protagonist whose family has been abducted by a shadowy cult conducting grotesque hallucinogen experiments on both animals and children. With the clock ticking, players must complete the rescue mission within a strict 72-hour in-game timeframe—equivalent to just 24 real-world hours—making time a central mechanic and relentless adversary.

A key gameplay feature will be a real-time countdown displayed on the protagonist’s wristwatch, a constant visual reminder of the narrowing window to save their loved ones. This persistent timer will not only amplify tension but also force players into rapid, high-stakes decisions, where hesitation can lead to irreversible outcomes. Far Cry 7 aims to deliver a deeply immersive and emotionally charged experience, where every second matters and every action carries weight.
