Upgrade Prerequisites:

First, acquire the Staff of Ice itself. This can be found in the Mystery Box or crafted from three parts. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus, via the Door to Nowhere, is crucial for progression.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals:

Quickly freeze three Dark Aether Crystals using the Staff of Ice. These crystals are within underground lanterns (black frame, purple glow). Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid this step. Optimize your route by strategically waiting for lantern spawns to cluster. A recommended route starts in the tomb area, then the Shrine of the Hierophants, and finally the Subterranean Temple entrance lantern (avoiding the lantern near Quick Revive due to distance). Success triggers a quote from Archibald, signaling entry to the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes:

Within the Dark Aether Nexus, locate three floating rocks with glowing purple Runes. Each Rune displays a unique symbol. Use the Staff of Ice to shoot each Rune (a hitmarker confirms success). This lowers the rocks, making Rune identification easier. A scoped weapon may improve accuracy. The order of shooting is inconsequential.

Step 3: Solving the Rune Symbol Puzzle:

Return to the main map. A stone wall replaces a portal. Locate the corresponding area and find a wall with Runic symbols. Shoot the three symbols matching those from the floating rocks. The portal will open regardless of correctness, but incorrect symbols lead to a mid-air drop in the Dark Aether Nexus. Multiple failures may require waiting for the next round. Correct symbols place you on a floating rock with a purple orb. Interact with the orb.

Step 4: Escorting the Soul Chest Orb:

The orb will move; kill zombies near it to power its journey. A purple trail shows the energy transfer. Guide the orb to the central structure in the Dark Aether Nexus, where it creates a small purple portal. Interact with this portal to upgrade your Staff of Ice to Ull’s Arrow.
