Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O Launches on Steam this Winter
Virtua Fighter Series' First Steam Debut
SEGA is bringing the beloved Virtua Fighter series to Steam for the very first time with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. This remaster marks the fifth major iteration of the 18-year-old classic, Virtua Fighter 5. Although the exact release date remains under wraps, SEGA has confirmed that it's set to hit the platform this winter.
Despite the numerous versions released over the years, SEGA touts Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O as "the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter." The game features rollback netcode support for seamless online play, even on less-than-ideal internet connections. Additionally, it boasts 4K graphics, enhanced high-resolution textures, and a smooth 60 fps framerate, ensuring a visually stunning and fluid gaming experience.
Players can enjoy classic modes such as Rank Match, Arcade, Training, and Versus. The game introduces two exciting new modes as well: the ability to create custom online tournaments and leagues with up to 16 players, and a Spectator Mode where players can watch others compete and learn new strategies and techniques.
The reception to Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O’s YouTube trailer has been overwhelmingly positive, despite it being the fifth iteration of the game. Enthusiastic fans have expressed their eagerness to purchase another version, with one stating, "Am I going to buy another copy of Virtua Fighter 5? You damn right." The community is also thrilled about the game's PC release, though some fans continue to hope for the eventual arrival of Virtua Fighter 6. One fan humorously noted, "Once the world is a radioactive wasteland with no internet after WW3, Sega will finally release VF6."
Previously Expected As Virtua Fighter 6
Earlier this month, an interview with VGC led many to believe that SEGA was working on Virtua Fighter 6. Justin Scarpone, SEGA's global head of transmedia, mentioned during the interview that "we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed."
However, these expectations were quickly dashed when Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O was listed on Steam on November 22, complete with upgraded visuals, new modes, and the addition of rollback netcode.
The Return of the Classic Fighting Game
Virtua Fighter 5 originally debuted on the SEGA Lindbergh arcade platform in July 2006, before being ported to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007. The game's storyline revolves around the Fifth World Fighting Tournament, organized by J6 or Judgement 6, inviting top fighters from around the globe. The initial release featured 17 playable characters, which increased to 19 in subsequent versions, including Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.
Since its launch, Virtua Fighter 5 has seen multiple updates and remasters, each enhancing the original and reaching new audiences. These include:
- Virtua Fighter 5 R (2008)
- Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (2010)
- Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021)
- Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O (2024)
With its updated visuals and modern features, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O continues to excite fans of the VF series, promising a thrilling return to the world of classic fighting games.
