How to Watch the X-Men Movies in Chronological Order

Author : Andrew Update:May 12,2025

While the X-Men franchise has captured hearts in comic books, the film adaptations have carved their own legendary status, with iconic performances from actors like Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. These movies are known for their complex timelines, weaving together origin stories, retcons, and time travel to create an intricate narrative tapestry. There are various ways to watch these films, and your choice will influence how certain plot points and character arcs unfold.

While it's tempting to watch them in the order of release, we've arranged the 14 films into a rough chronological timeline. This approach allows you to experience the X-Men saga from its earliest moments and follow the characters' journeys from the beginning.

Confused about how the X-Men movie timeline fits within the universe of the films and relates to the MCU? Follow the link where we break it down as best we can!

Which X-Men Movie Should You Watch First?

If you're new to the X-Men movie franchise, you can start with "X-Men: First Class" and follow the timeline chronologically. However, if you want to experience the films as they were originally released to audiences, begin with "X-Men" (2000), where the series officially kicked off.

X-Men Movies in Chronological Order

1. X-Men: First Class (2011)

"X-Men: First Class" marks the beginning of a new chapter in the X-Men saga, taking us back to the earliest point in the franchise's timeline. The film starts in 1944 at the Auschwitz concentration camp and then jumps to 1962. It explores the origins of a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, as well as the formation of both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants.

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is challenging to place on the timeline as it features characters from both the original and newer films. The story primarily unfolds in 1973, but also includes scenes in an alternate version of 2023. Certain plot elements, which we won't spoil here, justify its placement here, though it can also fit near the end of the list if preferred.
