Traditional Cambodian Board Game

Cambodians refer to the first type of Khmer chess as Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ).

The name "Ouk" is thought to originate from the sound produced when a chess piece contacts the board during a check. In terms of game rules, "Ouk" signifies a check, and the player delivering it must announce it audibly.

The formal name "Chaktrang" has Indian roots, deriving from the Sanskrit term Chaturanga (चतुरङ्ग).

Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is a two-player game. However, in Cambodia, it's typically played with two teams, making each match more engaging and lively. Cambodian men often gather at local barbershops or men's cafes to play.

The objective of Chaktrang is to checkmate the opponent's King. The starting player is determined by mutual agreement. In subsequent games, the loser usually earns the right to move first. If the initial game ends in a draw, players again decide the starting order through agreement.

The second variety of Cambodian chess is called Rek; explore the Rek game as well.
