Atomfall Profitable at Launch, Sequel Plans Discussed

Author : Bella Update:May 28,2025

If you're a fan of immersive survival games, Rebellion's Atomfall might just be the title you've been waiting for. Since its launch on March 27, 2025, across platforms like PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, the game has quickly established itself as Rebellion's most successful launch yet in terms of player numbers. Interestingly, a significant portion of its estimated 2 million players came from Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, meaning they didn’t purchase the game outright.

Despite this, Rebellion confirmed that Atomfall became immediately profitable upon release, recouping its development costs almost instantly. According to Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, partnering with Xbox Game Pass helped mitigate risks associated with cannibalizing traditional sales. In fact, Kingsley noted that the guaranteed income from Microsoft allowed the team to focus on creating quality content rather than worrying about immediate returns.

The success of Atomfall extends beyond just financial gains. Its post-apocalyptic setting in northern England has sparked discussions about potential sequels or spin-offs. Meanwhile, the ongoing post-launch support and DLC keep players engaged and invested in the world Rebellion has created.

Speaking to The Game Business, Rebellion highlighted that launching through Game Pass was a strategic move to maximize visibility and reach. By giving players the opportunity to try the game first, Atomfall benefited from positive word-of-mouth recommendations, driving additional organic sales. As Kingsley explained, "With Game Pass, you can get people to try it, then as a result of those people trying it, they like it, and they then tell their mates on social media."

While exact sales figures remain undisclosed, it's clear that Atomfall struck a balance between attracting casual gamers via subscriptions and appealing to dedicated fans willing to invest further. For IGN, Atomfall is a standout survival-action adventure that blends elements from Fallout and Elden Ring, delivering a unique experience that has captivated audiences worldwide.
