In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal choices awaits players near the game's conclusion: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries substantial weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) are needed for optimal companion interactions before and after the Netherbrain battle.
Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.
Free Orpheus or Side with the Emperor?
This choice hinges on player preference. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain encounter (which the party may fail), the Emperor presents the dilemma within the Astral Prism: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb Orpheus's power.
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, ending his life but potentially giving the party the edge against the Netherbrain. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests.
Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor aligns with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the battle alongside the Githyanki, and will even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.
In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus at the risk of tentacled companions. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
The "good" choice depends on player values, but loyalty is key. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki character might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if impacting the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it's a morally upright path, albeit a potentially squid-like one. Remember, multiple endings exist; strategic play can achieve favorable outcomes for everyone.
