FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Control Multiplayer FPS Hit

Control was crowned IGN's Game of the Year in 2019, and I, along with many other editors, voted for it. So, when Remedy Entertainment, known for their captivating single-player third-person narratives, announced a multiplayer spin-off, I couldn't help but feel skeptical. However, the unveiling of FBC: Firebreak, a three-player PvE first-person multiplayer shooter set six years post-Control, quickly dispelled my doubts. This game stands out with its originality in the crowded multiplayer shooter market, its delightfully bizarre elements, and its flexible playtime that doesn't demand a long-term commitment. As Mike Kayatta, the game director, emphasized, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." A sentiment that resonates well with players seeking enjoyment without the burden of extensive gameplay obligations.

FBC: Firebreak offers a unique co-op FPS experience where you can dive in for a quick 20-minute session or indulge for a few hours. The game introduces Perk unlocks and new character combinations to keep the gameplay fresh. Set in The Oldest House, you play as volunteer first responders with mundane professions like secretaries and rangers, tackling bizarre crises with equally odd weaponry. While the Federal Bureau of Control might not call you expendable, the nature of your role suggests otherwise.

When you start the game, you select a Job (mission), a Crisis Kit (loadout), set the Threat Level (difficulty), and Clearance Level, which determines the number of zones you'll navigate. These zones are separated by containment doors leading to the next stage of your Job. The demo showcased a mission called Paper Chase, set in an ordinary office section of the FBC building, where you and your team must combat the spreading Hiss. To gain in-game currencies for upgrades and new gear, you must safely escape with them, adding an extra layer of challenge to your exploration.

FBC: Firebreak differentiates itself with its arsenal of uniquely quirky weapons. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that can extinguish fires and douse sticky-note monsters to a makeshift zapper capable of summoning lightning storms, and even a wrench that, when paired with a piggy bank toy, showers enemies with coins, the game's weapons are both functional and fun. Traditional firearms like machine guns and shotguns remain available, particularly effective against the sticky-note monsters after using specialized weapons to weaken them.

The core mission involves eliminating sticky notes to prevent them from overtaking the building, culminating in a battle against a colossal sticky-note monster reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman. Beyond the weaponry, the game incorporates inventive gameplay mechanics such as office supply shelves for ammo refills, makeshift turrets assembled from boxes, stereo speakers to repel the Hiss, and rinse stations to remove aggressive sticky notes. Unlockable Perks add further depth and variety, such as bullets returning to your clip upon missing, or extinguishing flames by jumping. Stacking the same Perk enhances its effect, and with three, you can share it with nearby teammates.

FBC: Firebreak accommodates solo play and duos, not just trios, and aims for a lower minimum PC spec while supporting advanced features like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. It's also Steam Deck verified and will launch on Xbox and PC Game Pass, as well as PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on day one. While Remedy has a post-launch content plan and will offer paid cosmetics, these will be the only microtransactions.

Though I haven't yet had the chance to play FBC: Firebreak, its design and features certainly catch the eye. This isn't your typical multiplayer shooter; it's refreshingly different and appeals to those looking for a flexible, engaging experience reminiscent of simpler gaming times without the need for endless commitments.
