Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import title. Now, Gundam Breaker 4 boasts a simultaneous global release across Steam, Switch, PS4, and PS5. After 60 hours of gameplay across multiple platforms, I can confidently say it's a fantastic entry, though not without a few minor flaws.
This release is significant, marking a major step for Western Gundam fans. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 offers dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options, a welcome change from previous iterations. But how does the game itself fare?
The story, while serviceable, isn't the main attraction. While the initial chapters feel somewhat straightforward, the narrative picks up later with interesting character reveals and dialogue. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though the impact of certain character appearances might be lost without prior series knowledge.
The real draw is the unparalleled customization. You can meticulously adjust individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding), and even scale, allowing for wildly creative Gunpla designs. Builder parts add even more customization options, some with unique skills. EX and OP skills, along with ability cartridges, further enhance combat strategy.
Progression involves completing missions, earning parts, and upgrading them using materials. The game is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on normal difficulty. Higher difficulties unlock later, increasing the challenge. Optional quests, including a fun survival mode, offer additional rewards.
Beyond combat and upgrades, players can customize their Gunpla's paint, decals, and weathering effects. The depth of customization is astounding, making it a dream for Gunpla enthusiasts.
The gameplay itself is excellent. Combat remains engaging, even on easier difficulties. The variety of weapons and skills keeps things fresh. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and utilizing different strategies. While one specific boss fight proved challenging due to AI, the overall combat experience is highly enjoyable.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments can feel somewhat lacking, but the Gunpla models and animations are beautifully rendered. The art style is distinct and performs well on lower-end hardware. Effects are impressive, and the scale of boss fights is breathtaking.
The music is a bit underwhelming, with some forgettable tracks. The absence of music from the anime and movies is a missed opportunity. Voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese.
Minor issues include a few annoying mission types and some bugs. One mission crashed on my monitor but worked fine on my Steam Deck. Load times are significantly longer on Switch compared to PS5 and Steam Deck.
Online functionality was limited in my testing. PC servers weren't online pre-launch. PS5 online play was briefly tested and seemed functional. Steam Deck online play will be tested and reviewed once servers are live.
Platform Differences:
- PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Excellent Steam Deck performance (tested with Proton Experimental).
- PS5: Capped at 60fps, looks amazing. Good rumble and Activity Card support.
- Switch: Runs around 30fps, with noticeable downgrades in resolution, detail, and reflections. Assembly and diorama modes are sluggish.
The Ultimate Edition offers some DLC, including additional parts and diorama content. While not game-changing, the extra content enhances the overall experience.
The story is enjoyable but secondary to the core gameplay loop. If you're looking for a story-driven experience, consider Megaton Musashi.
Gundam Breaker 4 is a triumph. It's a spectacular game, especially on PC and PS5. The depth of customization, engaging combat, and overall polish make it a must-have for Gundam and Gunpla fans.
