Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption remains uncertain, this purported functionality aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a rich source of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, yielded a new revelation in early January 2025. LiC uncovered references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, strongly suggests a mouse-like functionality for the new Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers are absent from publicly available component databases, implying these are entirely new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in handheld gaming. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider to improve surface glide.

The Legion GO also shares another rumored Switch 2 feature: magnetic rails for easy controller attachment. This similarity offers a potential glimpse into the design philosophy of Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
