Marvel Snap's roster of animal companions has been notably sparse, limited to characters like Cosmo, Groose, Zabu, and Hit Monkey. However, the Brave New World season introduces a new feathered friend: Redwing, Falcon's loyal pet.
Redwing's Mechanics in Marvel Snap
Redwing is a 3-cost, 4-power card with a unique ability: The first time it moves, a card is added from your hand to its original location. This ability has some key limitations:
-
Single-Use Ability: Redwing's effect triggers only once, regardless of attempts to reuse it via cards like Symbiote Spider-Man or by returning it to your hand. This significantly restricts its strategic applications.
-
Targeting Challenges: Precisely targeting the card added to the original location proves difficult. Move decks often utilize low-cost cards (like Iron Fist) that are undesirable additions, while Scream-focused decks typically manipulate opponent's cards rather than their own.
Despite these limitations, inexpensive move cards like Madame Web or Cloak (accessible to players with lower Collection Levels) can effectively deploy Redwing. Its potential for surprise victories exists by strategically placing a powerful card like Galactus early or drawing a high-value card such as The Infinaut.
Optimal Redwing Deck Compositions (Day One)
Ares and Surtur-centric decks, prominent in the previous season, continue their dominance with a Scream-based variation. This build incorporates cards like Aero and Heimdall, and Redwing surprisingly integrates well (although playing Surtur on turn 3 remains the priority). This deck, however, is costly, featuring several Series 5 cards:
- High-Cost Deck: Hydra Bob, Scream, Redwing, Surtur, Ares, and Cull Obsidian. Hydra Bob can be substituted with a 1-cost alternative (Rocket Raccoon or Iceman), but the remaining Series 5 cards are essential.
The strategy revolves around deploying Surtur on turn 3, followed by high-power cards to amplify Surtur's power. Scream provides an alternative win condition by power manipulation. Polaris, Aero, and Magneto facilitate card manipulation, while Redwing, when played into Heimdall, buffs Surtur and draws a high-power card.
Another potential Redwing deck incorporates Madame Web, given the reduced prevalence of move-based decks post-Dagger nerf. Madame Web's Ongoing ability synergizes with recently popular Ongoing decks, offering a possible niche for Redwing:
- Ongoing Deck: This deck features two Series 5 cards: Madame Web and Doom 2099. Madame Web isn't strictly necessary, but removing her necessitates removing Redwing for another Ongoing card (like Mobius M. Mobius).
This is primarily a Doom 2099 Ongoing deck, aiming for rapid power distribution across locations. Madame Web assists by repositioning Doom 2099 units, preventing location overflow and offering an alternative method to move Sam Wilson's shield. Redwing's activation is solely through Madame Web. The final turn (6) involves deploying Doctor Doom or Spectrum for power distribution or a power spike, respectively.
Is Redwing Worth Investing In?
Currently, Redwing's value is questionable. Its underpowered nature and reliance on a currently weak archetype suggest it's best to conserve resources for stronger cards. Unless significant buffs are implemented, Redwing's worth remains low.
