Annapurna Game Division Departs, Uncertain Future Lies Ahead

The entire Annapurna Interactive team, the video game division of Annapurna Pictures, has resigned en masse following a dispute with Megan Ellison. This unexpected development leaves the future of the publisher, known for titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch, uncertain.

A Mass Exodus at Annapurna Interactive

The resignation of the entire staff, including over 20 employees, resulted from failed negotiations between Annapurna Interactive's employees and its parent company. Led by then-president Nathan Gary, the staff reportedly sought to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity. However, these negotiations ultimately collapsed, leading to the mass resignation.

According to Bloomberg, Gary confirmed the collective resignation of all 25 team members, stating that the decision was “one of the hardest we have ever had to make.”

Annapurna Pictures, through Ellison, reassured partners of their commitment to ongoing projects and expansion within interactive entertainment. Ellison stated their intention to pursue a more integrated approach across various media, including film, television, gaming, and theater.

Impact on Partners and Ongoing Projects

This mass exodus has significant ramifications for indie developers who collaborated with Annapurna Interactive. These developers are now facing uncertainty regarding their partnerships and the future of their projects. The situation is particularly concerning for those relying on Annapurna Interactive for publishing and support.

Remedy Entertainment, whose upcoming Control 2 received partial funding from Annapurna Interactive, clarified that their agreement is with Annapurna Pictures, and they are self-publishing Control 2.

Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as the new president. Sources indicate Sanchez is committed to fulfilling existing contracts and replacing the departing staff. This appointment follows a recent restructuring announcement and the departures of former president Nathan Gary and co-heads Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella. The company’s commitment to its existing projects and future growth remains to be seen.
