Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Moment at EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament has made a surprising, yet exciting, announcement: chess, the ancient game of strategy, will be featured as an esport. This partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the EWCF marks a significant milestone for the game.
Chess Officially Joins the Esports World Cup
This unprecedented inclusion of chess in the EWC, the world's largest gaming and esports festival, promises to introduce the game to a vastly expanded audience. EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," perfectly aligning with the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities.
Magnus Carlsen, retired world champion and current world number one, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader demographic. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to introduce chess to new players and inspire future generations.
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC 2025 chess competition, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 31st to August 3rd, boasts a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC.
To enhance its appeal to esports fans, the CCT will utilize a faster-paced 10-minute time control format for matches, with Armageddon tiebreakers.
Chess, with roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, has evolved significantly over the centuries. Its digital adaptation, facilitated by platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its reach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further propelled by streaming, influencers, and popular media like "The Queen's Gambit," chess is now poised for even greater global recognition as a dynamic esport.
