11 bit Studios has officially announced Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the groundbreaking first game, scheduled for release in 2027. The Polish developer will utilize Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project, which follows just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2. Given that the original Frostpunk debuted in 2018, the upcoming remake will mark almost a decade since its initial release.
Set in an alternate-history late 19th century, Frostpunk challenges players to build and manage a city amidst a global volcanic winter. From resource management to moral dilemmas, the game immerses players in a survival experience that combines city-building with strategic decision-making.
IGN praised the original Frostpunk, awarding it a 9/10 and noting its seamless blend of themes and gameplay into a "unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game." While Frostpunk 2 received an 8/10, IGN highlighted its expanded social and political complexity compared to its predecessor.
Despite focusing on updates and DLC for Frostpunk 2, 11 bit Studios remains committed to advancing its legacy through Frostpunk 1886. Abandoning its proprietary Liquid Engine, the studio now seeks to leverage Unreal Engine 5 to breathe new life into the series' origins. This remake promises not only improved visuals but also fresh content, mechanics, and laws, along with an entirely new "Purpose path" that introduces a novel experience even for veteran players.
One of the most exciting aspects of Frostpunk 1886 is its inclusion of mod support, addressing a longstanding fan request made unfeasible by the limitations of the original engine. Additionally, the game aims to serve as a dynamic platform for future DLC releases.
11 bit Studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 coexist, each charting its own path forward. Meanwhile, the studio is actively developing The Alters, set for release in June.
