HBO Max reverts to original name, WBD confirms

Author : Skylar Update:Jan 07,2026

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Max will revert to its original name, HBO Max, starting this summer.

The unexpected rebranding comes merely two years after HBO Max was rebranded as Max. The soon-to-be HBO Max again remains the premier streaming destination for acclaimed titles like Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and the upcoming The Penguin.

WBD revealed that its streaming division achieved nearly $3 billion in profitability turnaround within two years, while growing globally with 22 million new subscribers last year. The company projects surpassing 150 million subscribers by late 2026.

"This success stems from strategic refocusing on high-performing content categories - HBO originals, recent theatrical releases, documentaries, select reality series, Max originals, and local productions - while reducing emphasis on less engaging genres," the company explained.

Why return to HBO Max now? The HBO brand represents premium, distinctive content worth subscribing to - exactly what viewers increasingly prioritize amidst today's oversaturated streaming landscape.

"Market research shows consumers don't crave more content, but rather better content," WBD stated. "While competitors focus on quantity, we've differentiated through quality storytelling - HBO's legacy proves this approach works."

"Reinstating HBO Max reaffirms our commitment to exceptional programming. This strategic shift demonstrates WBD's data-driven agility in delivering what subscribers truly value."

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav commented: "Our streaming growth reflects our content excellence. Reembracing HBO - media's gold standard brand - will propel this momentum forward."

Streaming President JB Perrette added: "We'll maintain our distinctive edge - crafting exceptional content for discerning viewers rather than attempting universal appeal."

HBO and Max Content Chairman Casey Bloys concluded: "HBO Max better represents our premium offering and reaffirms our promise to deliver unmistakably superior content - content that's genuinely worth paying for."
