Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the popular creature-catching shooter into a live service game. The interview revealed a careful consideration of various options, highlighting both the potential benefits and significant challenges involved.
Live Service: A Lucrative but Complex Path
While Mizobe confirmed upcoming updates including new maps, Pals, and raid bosses, he clarified that the long-term direction for Palworld remains undecided. The primary options under consideration are completing Palworld as a traditional buy-to-play (B2P) title or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps).
Mizobe acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, stating it offers greater profit potential and extends the game's lifespan. However, he emphasized the inherent challenges, noting that Palworld's initial design wasn't geared towards this model. This presents a significant hurdle in adapting the existing game mechanics and structure.
Player Preferences: A Crucial Factor
A critical aspect of this decision hinges on player preference. Mizobe highlighted the difficulty of converting a B2P game into a live service title, contrasting it with the typical free-to-play (F2P) model where monetized content is more easily integrated. He cited successful transitions like PUBG and Fall Guys, but emphasized the considerable time and effort these transitions required.
Alternative Monetization Strategies
Mizobe also discussed alternative monetization strategies, such as ad integration. However, he dismissed this option for the PC version, citing the strong negative reaction PC gamers typically have towards in-game advertising. He observed that even if effective, ads would likely alienate a significant portion of the Steam player base.
Current Focus: Growth and Player Retention
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and retention while exploring the best path forward for Palworld's future. The recent Sakurajima update and the introduction of PvP arena mode represent their commitment to enhancing the existing game experience. Ultimately, the decision regarding Palworld's long-term direction remains under careful consideration.
