Sony Patents Hint at PS5 Controller Transforming into Gun

Sony's New Patents Predicts Your Moves and Turns the PS5 Controller Into a Gun

Sony has recently added two exciting patents to its expansive portfolio, both aimed at enhancing your gaming experience. Dive in to discover how an AI-powered camera can anticipate your actions and how a new DualSense trigger attachment can make your gunfights feel more lifelike.

Two New Patents For Sony

AI That Predicts Your Movement To Reduce Lag

Sony's New Patents Predicts Your Moves and Turns the PS5 Controller Into a Gun

Sony's latest innovations include an AI-powered camera designed to predict a player's next move and a gun trigger attachment for the DualSense controller.

The patent, known as Timed Input/Action Release, involves installing a camera to monitor both the player and the controller. This camera captures footage that an AI, or a "machine learning-based model or other system," analyzes to anticipate the player's next button press. Alternatively, the system can interpret "incomplete controller actions" and predict the player's intentions from there.

This technology is aimed at reducing lag in online games, allowing the AI and computer system to stay one step ahead, thus minimizing latency. Lag has long been a significant challenge in online gaming, and this solution could be a game-changer.

A Trigger For The DualSense Controller For Realistic Gunfights

Another intriguing patent is for a trigger attachment designed to enhance the realism of gunplay in FPS and action-adventure RPG games.

By attaching this trigger to the DualSense controller, players can hold it sideways, using the right arm as a gun stock, as illustrated in the diagram. The space between the R1 and R2 buttons acts as the gun's sight, and pulling the trigger simulates the firing of a real firearm. The patent also suggests that this accessory could be compatible with other devices, such as the PSVR2 headset.

Sony has a rich history of innovation, with 78% of its 95,533 patents still active. These include concepts like adaptive difficulty based on player skill, a DualSense controller variant that can store and charge earbuds, and a controller that changes temperature based on in-game events. While patents do not guarantee the production of actual products, Sony's commitment to enhancing gaming experiences is evident. Only time will tell if these innovative ideas will become tangible products for gamers to enjoy.
