Halo Infinite Lead's Studio Axes Debut Game

Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses Development on First Game

Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. The studio, formed in 2022, is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its vision for a next-generation narrative-driven action game.

NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming Season 1 Battle Pass, along with the anticipated arrival of the Fantastic Four on January 10th, highlight NetEase's commitment to its existing portfolio.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's search for a partner who can effectively support their creative vision. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold risks taken to create a truly unique gaming experience. While layoffs weren't explicitly mentioned, a subsequent post indicated the studio will assist team members in finding new roles in the coming weeks.

This isn't the first instance of a prominent game developer establishing a studio under NetEase. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, similarly founded GPTRACK50 Studios in 2022.

The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise. Following challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential revitalization.

While Jar of Sparks' project is temporarily on hold, the future remains uncertain. The search for a new publisher will determine the fate of this ambitious project and its impact on the gaming landscape.
