Console War: Is It Over?

Author : Aaron Update:Apr 27,2025

The age-old debate of PlayStation versus Xbox has been a staple in the gaming community for years. From heated discussions on Reddit to viral TikTok videos, everyone seems to have an opinion on which console reigns supreme. Yet, with the video game industry undergoing massive transformations, the landscape of this so-called 'console war' has shifted dramatically. The rise of handheld gaming and the tech-savvy younger generations building their own gaming rigs have reshaped the battlefield. But has a clear winner emerged from this evolving conflict? The answer might surprise you.

The video game industry has become a financial powerhouse, with global revenue soaring from $285 billion in 2019 to an impressive $475 billion in 2023. This figure surpasses the combined earnings of the global movie and music industries, which generated $308 billion and $28.6 billion respectively last year. Projections indicate that by 2029, the industry will generate nearly $700 billion, a testament to its growth from the days of Pong.

This financial success has attracted Hollywood stars like Mads Mikkelsen, Keanu Reeves, Jon Bernthal, and Willem Dafoe to star in video games, signaling a shift in the perception of gaming as a legitimate and lucrative medium. Even Disney is making significant strides into the gaming world, investing $1.5 billion in Epic Games as part of Bob Iger's strategy to establish a gaming presence. However, not all boats are rising with the tide, particularly for Microsoft's Xbox.

Xbox Series X and S consoles

The Xbox Series X and S were designed to be significant upgrades from the Xbox One. Despite their technological advancements, they haven't captured the market's enthusiasm. The Xbox One outsells the Series X/S by nearly double, and according to Mat Piscatella of Circana, the current console generation may have peaked in sales. The 2024 sales figures are even more concerning, with the Xbox Series X/S selling less than 2.5 million units throughout the year, while the PlayStation 5 achieved the same sales figure in just the first quarter of 2024. Rumors of Xbox pulling out of the physical game market and possibly exiting the EMEA region suggest that Microsoft may be signaling a retreat.

However, Xbox isn't merely retreating; it has effectively surrendered. Microsoft's statements during the Activision-Blizzard acquisition process revealed that the company believes it never had a real chance in the console war. With the Xbox Series X/S struggling and Microsoft openly acknowledging this, the company is shifting its focus away from traditional console sales.

Xbox Game Pass has become a central focus for Microsoft, as evidenced by leaked documents showing the substantial costs to include AAA titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on the service. Microsoft's recent 'This Is An Xbox' campaign emphasizes the shift towards a service-based model rather than just hardware. This redefinition suggests that Xbox wants to be an always-accessible gaming service, not just a console under your TV.

Rumors of an Xbox handheld in development further indicate Microsoft's pivot towards a 'hybrid cloud gaming platform.' Phil Spencer, Xbox's chief, has acknowledged the dominance of mobile gaming, which is shaping Microsoft's strategy. The company is also planning a mobile game store to compete with Apple and Google, highlighting its commitment to being a gaming brand you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

Mobile gaming statistics

Microsoft's pivot is driven by the undeniable rise of mobile gaming. In 2024, of the estimated 3.3 billion gamers worldwide, over 1.93 billion play on mobile devices. This includes casual gamers and has become the dominant segment of the video game market, particularly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. The total market valuation for the video game industry in 2024 was $184.3 billion, with mobile games accounting for half of that at $92.5 billion. Console gaming, on the other hand, represents just $50.3 billion, a 4% drop from the previous year. It's no wonder Microsoft is keen on turning your phone into an Xbox.

Mobile gaming's dominance is not a new phenomenon. By 2013, the Asian market for mobile gaming was already outpacing the West, with South Korea and China leading the charge. That year, Puzzle & Dragon and Candy Crush Saga outperformed GTA 5 in revenue. Looking back at the 2010s, five of the highest-grossing games were mobile titles like Crossfire, Monster Strike, Honor of Kings, Puzzle & Dragon, and Clash of Clans, which have become culturally significant despite not being household names.

While mobile gaming has taken the spotlight, PC gaming has also seen substantial growth. Since 2014, the number of PC gamers has increased by 59 million annually, reaching 1.86 billion in 2024. This rise was particularly pronounced during the 2020 COVID pandemic, which boosted streaming and online gaming. Despite this growth, the gap between console and PC gaming has widened from $2.3 billion in 2016 to $9 billion in 2024, suggesting a decline in PC gaming's market share.

PlayStation 5 sales

On the other side of the 'console war,' PlayStation is thriving. Sony reported selling 65 million PS5s, significantly outpacing the combined 29.7 million sales of the Xbox Series X/S. For every Xbox sold, five PS5s find a home. Sony's Game and Network Services saw a 12.3% profit increase, driven by strong sales of first-party titles like Astro Bot and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Projections suggest Sony will sell 106.9 million PS5s by 2029, while Microsoft expects to sell between 56-59 million Xbox Series X/S units by 2027. With Xbox titles potentially coming to PlayStation and other platforms, it seems PlayStation is currently the King of Console.

However, the PS5's success comes with caveats. Half of PlayStation users still play on PS4s, and the PS5 lacks a robust lineup of exclusive titles. Of the top 20 best-selling games in the U.S. in 2024, only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a true PS5-exclusive. The PS5 Pro, priced at $700, received mixed reviews for being an early upgrade with games that were mostly upscaled from the previous generation. Many believe the PS5 hasn't yet justified its price, but this could change with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year.

So, is the console war over? For Microsoft, it seems there was never a real fight. For Sony, the PS5 is a success but hasn't yet proven to be a significant leap forward. The real winners appear to be those who opted out of the traditional console war. Mobile gaming giants like Tencent are making moves into the console space, and companies like Take-Two Interactive report that 10% of the world's population plays their mobile games monthly. The future of gaming will likely be defined less by hardware and more by the strength and speed of cloud gaming services. The console war may be over, but the mobile gaming war is just beginning.
