Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: A Deep Dive into Pixel Art, World-Building, and Combat
This interview features Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director) from Pixel Tribe, the developers behind the upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order. They provide insights into the creation of this pixel RPG.
Crafting Pixel Perfection
Droid Gamers: What inspires your pixel sprites?
Ilsun: Goddess Order, a mobile action RPG, builds upon the pixel art success of Crusaders Quest. Our high-quality pixel art aims for a console-like feel, emphasizing narrative. Character design draws from a vast wellspring of gaming and storytelling experiences. Pixel art is about subtly conveying form and movement through tiny units, making it less about specific references and more about the nuanced impact of accumulated experience. Collaboration is key; the initial characters (Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan) evolved through team discussions, shaping the overall art style. Ongoing dialogue with scenario writers and combat designers further refines character concepts, ensuring visual consistency with narrative and gameplay.
From Characters to Worlds
Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building?
Terron J.: World-building in Goddess Order begins with the characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Yan, with their inherent personalities and missions, formed the game's foundation. Their stories, filled with growth and heroism, organically shaped the game's narrative and world. The emphasis on manual controls stems from the characters' strength and the immersive experience of their unfolding biographies.
Designing Dynamic Combat
Droid Gamers: How do you design combat styles and animations?
Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat system revolves around three-character turn-based battles utilizing link skills. Design focuses on creating unique roles for each character, ensuring strategic depth in team composition. We consider whether a character excels at powerful attacks, rapid strikes, or support roles, optimizing for synergistic linked skills. Adjustments are made to ensure each character contributes uniquely to combat dynamics.
Ilsun: Visual representation enhances these characteristics. Weapon choice, appearance, and movements emphasize each character's personality and concept. While 2D pixel art is used, we strive for three-dimensional movement, creating a unique visual style. The team uses real-world weapons to study movement for realistic combat animations.
Terron J.: Technical optimization is crucial for smooth mobile gameplay. We ensure consistent performance across devices, preventing interruptions to combat and cutscenes. The focus is on a seamless, immersive firsthand experience.
The Future of Goddess Order
Ilsun: Goddess Order offers a narrative-driven JRPG experience, following the Lisbeth Knights' quest to save the world. Post-launch, we plan to expand content with additional activities like quests and treasure hunts, alongside continuous updates to chapter and origin stories. Advanced content with refined controls will also be added.
