Counter-Strike Co-Creator Praises Valve's Role
Le Applauds Valve's Preservation of Counter-Strike's Legacy
In a recent interview with Spillhistorie.no commemorating Counter-Strike's 25th anniversary, Minh "Gooseman" Le, one of the game's creators, reflected on the franchise's success. Le and his partner, Jess Cliffe, created this hugely popular first-person shooter, now a genre classic.
Le highlighted Valve's crucial role in Counter-Strike's phenomenal success. Looking back on the decision to sell the rights to Valve, he stated, "I'm pleased with how things unfolded with Valve. They've done an exceptional job preserving the legacy of CS."
The transition to Steam wasn't without its hurdles. Le recalled, "Steam had significant stability problems in its early days; there were periods when players couldn't even log in." Despite these initial technical difficulties, Le acknowledged the invaluable support of the community in stabilizing the platform. "The community provided incredible assistance; many created helpful guides that smoothed the transition," he explained.
Le initially developed Counter-Strike as a Half-Life mod in 1998 while an undergraduate student.
His inspiration stemmed from "arcade games like Virtua Cop and Time Crisis, along with action films like those by John Woo and Hollywood productions such as Heat, Ronin, Air Force One, and the Tom Clancy films of the 90s." Cliffe joined the project in 1999, contributing to map design.
Counter-Strike's 25th anniversary on June 19th underscored its enduring popularity. Counter-Strike 2, the latest iteration, boasts a massive monthly player base of nearly 25 million. Despite fierce competition, Valve's dedication has ensured the game's continued thriving.
Le expressed deep gratitude for Valve's handling of his creation. "It's been incredibly humbling, given my high regard for Valve. Working with them provided invaluable learning experiences; collaborating with top-tier game developers imparted skills I wouldn't have acquired elsewhere," he concluded.
