In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, the developers of Doom: The Dark Ages unveiled exciting new details about the game's gameplay. This latest installment places a strong emphasis on storytelling, with levels designed to be the largest in the series' history, offering players a sandbox-like experience that promises to redefine the franchise.
Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton shared key insights during the discussion. Unlike previous Doom titles where backstory was often tucked away in text logs, The Dark Ages will employ a more direct storytelling method. The game will immerse players in a medieval atmosphere, significantly reducing the futuristic elements that fans are accustomed to. Even the iconic weapons will undergo a design transformation to align with the new setting.

While maintaining the series' tradition of distinct levels, Doom: The Dark Ages will feature the most expansive environments yet, seamlessly blending dungeon crawling with open-world exploration. The game's structure is divided into "acts," beginning with tight, claustrophobic dungeons and evolving into vast, open areas. To add variety to gameplay, players will have the unique opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech.
A notable addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that also functions as a chainsaw. This innovative weapon can be hurled at enemies, with its effects varying based on the target material—whether it's flesh, armor, energy shields, or other substances. The shield also facilitates a dash attack, enabling rapid closure of distance on the battlefield. With the absence of double jumps and roars from earlier games, this shield mechanic becomes essential for mobility. Additionally, the shield supports parrying, with adjustable difficulty settings and precise timing windows.
In an interesting twist, parrying serves as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat replenishes ammunition for primary weapons, akin to the chainsaw mechanic seen in DOOM Eternal. Players can choose from a variety of melee options, including a swift gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a slower but powerful mace.
