NIS America is ramping up its efforts to bring Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys series to Western audiences more swiftly. Dive into the details of the publisher's strategy to accelerate the localization of these beloved franchises.
NIS America Enhances Localization for Trails and Ys Games
Accelerated Releases for Falcom's Games in the West
Exciting updates for fans of Japanese RPGs! At the recent digital showcase for Ys X: Nordics, NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, shared the publisher's commitment to speeding up the localization process for Falcom's Trails and Ys series.
In an interview with PCGamer, Costa hinted at internal efforts to expedite localizations but emphasized the dedication to quality. "We've been working hard to localize these games more quickly," he stated, mentioning the upcoming releases of Ys X: Nordics and Trails Through Daybreak II, set for October and early next year, respectively.
Despite Trails Through Daybreak II launching in Japan in September 2022, its planned Western release in early 2025 marks a significant reduction in the usual wait time for Trails titles.
Historically, fans have endured long delays for these series. For example, Trails in the Sky, which debuted in Japan in 2004, didn't reach Western audiences until the PSP version in 2011, published by XSEED Games. More recent titles, such as Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure, took twelve years to localize.
The challenges of localization were highlighted by former XSEED Games Localization Manager, Jessica Chavez, in 2011. She pointed out the monumental task of translating millions of characters with a small team as a major bottleneck, especially given the extensive text in Trails games.
While the localization process still spans two to three years, NIS America remains committed to quality. Costa noted, "We aim to release games as quickly as possible without compromising localization quality... We're continually refining this balance, and we're improving."
Localization is a time-consuming process, particularly with games containing vast amounts of text. The one-year delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to mistranslation issues underscores the challenges NIS America faces. However, Costa's comments suggest that the company is finding a way to balance speed and accuracy effectively.
The recent release of Trails Through Daybreak indicates a promising shift in NIS America's ability to deliver high-quality localizations faster. With its positive reception among fans and newcomers alike, this bodes well for future releases from NIS America.
