Parkour Evolves in Assassin

Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan-set installment, is set to launch February 14th. This latest entry introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour mechanics and protagonist design.

The game boasts a revamped parkour system, shifting from the free-climbing style of previous iterations to designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring strategic approaches. This design choice, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allows for more controlled level design and enhances the distinction between the two playable characters.

Speaking of characters, Shadows features dual protagonists: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but unable to climb. This dual-protagonist approach caters to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Further enhancing the parkour experience are seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and a smoother descent. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding to the fluidity of movement.

The shift to defined climbing routes, while a departure from previous titles, aims to create more engaging and well-designed parkour sequences. The addition of a grappling hook further expands traversal options.

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Its February release will place it amongst a strong lineup of competing titles, making its success a compelling question.
