Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has been a key component of player interaction, offering assistance, misdirection, and humorous commentary. However, this feature will be absent from Nightreign to maintain a streamlined, intense experience.
While the messaging system is being removed, other asynchronous features are not only returning but being improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for instance, will be enhanced, allowing players to not only witness but also loot the ghosts of fallen comrades.
FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" experience in Nightreign, prioritizing intensity and multiplayer interaction. This vision, coupled with the game's planned three-day structure, informed the decision to omit the messaging system. The goal is to minimize downtime and maximize variety within a shorter playtime.
Nightreign, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is currently slated for a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
