In an exciting revelation at Gamescom, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon shared insights on how Mortal Kombat 1 will uniquely differentiate the gameplay of two iconic characters, Homelander and Omni-Man. Addressing fan concerns about potential similarities in combat styles, Boon emphasized the creative approach NetherRealm Studios is taking to ensure these heroes feel distinctly different in the game.
During an interview with IGN, Boon highlighted the importance of distinguishing Homelander and Omni-Man. He noted that the development team has been granted ample creative freedom to explore various ideas for these characters. However, they are consciously avoiding overlapping abilities that could make the characters feel too similar, such as both having heat vision, which might remind players of Superman. "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that," Boon explained.
Boon further elaborated on how the team is drawing inspiration from the heroes' actions in their respective shows to craft unique Fatalities for each character. This approach not only ensures that Homelander and Omni-Man play differently but also leverages their distinctive traits to create engaging and diverse gameplay experiences. "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters,'" Boon stated, reassuring fans that NetherRealm is committed to delivering unique experiences with these characters.
